English language arts

Middle School (MS) English Language Arts (ELA) will offer students a comprehensive and engaging learning experience in language arts. In MS ELA courses, students will develop and strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. These skills are essential for academic success and lifelong learning. The Core Knowledge Language Arts curriculum fosters a love for literature, critical thinking, and effective communication. Students will explore various genres of literature, analyze and interpret texts, and develop a deeper understanding of the author's purpose and intent. MS ELA emphasizes strong writing skills, teaching students to express thoughts and ideas coherently and effectively through various types of writing. Students will engage in class discussions, presentations, and collaborative activities to enhance their speaking and listening skills. MS ELA courses will integrate technology and media literacy skills into teaching and learning.

Mathematics

Middle School (MS) Mathematics will focus on developing students’ deep understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. MS Mathematics will cover a range of concepts and skills, including numbers and operations, geometry, algebra, and data analysis. Students will learn how to perform functions with different types of numbers, solve world problems, and apply math to real-life situations. Students will also study shapes, angles, lines, and symmetry in geometry, as well as variables, equations, and functions in algebra. Data analysis and probability will teach students how to collect, organize, and interpret data. MS Mathematics will emphasize problem-solving skills, helping students develop critical thinking and logical reasoning abilities. MS Mathematics will provide a strong foundation for further math education in high school and postsecondary.
SCIENCE

In Middle School (MS) Science, students will explore various scientific disciplines, including biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. Students will learn about the scientific method, conducting experiments, and analyzing data. The Core Knowledge curriculum will focus on content and understanding the importance of transparency, reproducibility, and collaboration in scientific research. There will be an emphasis on critical thinking and skepticism. Students will learn to critically evaluate scientific claims, examine evidence, and consider alternative explanations. MS Science will include lab components.
SOCIAL STUDIES

Middle School (MS) Social Studies will cover world history, geography, American history, civics, and economics. We aim to provide students with a foundational understanding of the world and how societies function. Students will study different periods, events, and historical figures. Students will learn about the physical and cultural features of the Earth, as well as how geography influences human behavior. American history will provide students with a foundational understanding of the nation’s past and how it has shaped the present. Through civics, students will learn about government, citizenship, and the democratic process. Students will develop a basic understanding of economic concepts and explore how economic decisions have impacted individuals and societies. MS Social Studies will encourage critical thinking, cultural awareness, and civic engagement
SPANISH

Middle School (MS) Spanish will introduce students to the language basics, including vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Students will learn how to communicate in everyday situations, talk about themselves and others, and discuss topics such as family, hobbies, and school. Students will also study Spanish grammar, including verb conjugation and sentence structure. Students will explore the culture of Spanish-speaking countries, learn about traditions and famous figures, and immerse themselves in aspects of the different cultures. Interactive activities and projects will help students practice their language skills.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Urban Collegiate Academy Middle School (MS) will leverage technology to enhance student learning opportunities for our students. MS will have access to various digital platforms, online study resources, and interactive learning materials. Additionally, students will have access to personalized learning supports to help them master foundational and grade-level content and skills.
